August 12, 2009: The Indian Railways posted revenues of Rs 27,545.41 crore in the first four months of the 2009-10 fiscal, an increase of 5.8 percent over the corresponding period last year.
Freight revenues grew 4 percent to Rs 18,526.18 crore, accounting for 67 percent of the total revenues. Passenger revenues were up by 8.7 percent touching Rs 7,836.56 crore, said an official release.
Coal, iron ore and cement are the top three components in the Railways' freight basket.
The rise in passenger revenue comes despite the Railways keeping fares unchanged, or even lowering them in some cases.
