Essar plans integrated steel unit in Karnataka

February 12, 2009: Karnataka has given permission to Essar Steel for setting up a 6 million tons per annum (mtpa) integrated mill. The company has also sought iron ore mines allocation from the state.

An SBB report quoted an Essar official as saying the first phase would have a capacity of 3 mtpa and include raw materials processing units such as an iron ore pellet plant and a coke oven battery. Capacity will be ramped up to 6 mtpa in the second phase.

Essar is also setting up a 6,00,000 tpa pipe-making unit and 1.5 mtpa heavy plate mill in Gujarat, scheduled to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2009-10.
